Dr. Costas Pappas

Dr. Costas Pappas (Κώστας Παπαναστασόπουλος), was born in Athens in December 1940.
Costas graduated from the 2nd High School of Athens (Β’ Γυμνάσιο Αρρένων Αθηνών) and then graduated from the Radio Technical School of Athens.
He served in the Royal Navy (1961-1963), on board of the destroyer “Velos” and later in the Naval Academy (Σχολή Ναυτικών Δοκίμων).
As a teenager was an athlete of the “Panellinios Gymnastics Association (ΠΑΝΕΛΛΗΝΙΟΣ Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Αθηνών)” and a member of the National Junior Team.
In 1958, he won the first place in the School games in B’ District of Athens in 800 meters.
In his military service has been a member of the National Military Athletic team.
He immigrated to South Africa in 1963 until 1965, working as a Technician at the SONY Corporation.
In 1966 he immigrated to Canada, where he currently lives.

He graduated from “Université de Montreal (Loyola Campus)” with B.Sc. (Honors-Cum Laude) in Physics and Mathematics.
He completed one year post graduate studies in Astrophysics and then continued Post Graduate studies at Mc Master University, Hamilton, Ontario, in Nuclear and Solid-State Physics.
The following year, he worked as a researcher at the Polytechnic School of Montreal (Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal), on the effects of Radioactivity in Metals.
In 1975-1978, he worked with the Nobel Laureate in Physics Dr. B.N. Brockhouse for his Ph.D. in Physics, in “Neutron Scattering on Crystals”, at Temperatures close to Absolute Zero (-273 degrees C), to study the Magnetic properties, while simultaneously was working for his Master degree (M. Sc.) in Computer Science.

In 1978 was hired by Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL), working for the Heavy Water Nuclear Reactors (PHWR) CANDU 600 MW. He worked for 30 years in CANDU Reactors in various projects, such as:
Quebec (Gentilly 1 & 2)
New Brunswick (Point Lepreau)
Korea (4 units Wolsung 1 to 4)
Argentina (Cordoba)
Rumania (2 units Cernavoda 1 and 2)
China (2 units Qinshan 1 and 2).

He also designed the Control system of the Prototype Experimental KMRR-HANARO Nuclear -Pool type- Reactor 30 MW in Korea.
He developed the DECOM software used to Decommission Gentilly-1 Reactor in Quebec and other reactors globally.
He retired in 2006 from AECL and then joined as a Consultant Nuclear engineer the SNC Lavalin, to restore the operation of the two nuclear units in Bruce, Ontario.
He worked, as a consultant in South Africa, for the PBMR Reactors, travelling there for short periods as an advisor.
From 1996 until 2000 he was the Elected Secretary and Treasurer of the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) for the Province of Quebec.
In 2010 he joined again Atomic Energy of Canada at the Canadian Research Nuclear Laboratories (CRNL), this time as a Consultant,
from where he retired in December 2017, having completed 39 years of meritorious Service in Nuclear Physics in Power and Research projects.

Costas besides his academic career, he offered to the Hellenes of the Diaspora from various community positions.
In 1992-1995 was the Secretary of the Advisory Board of the Greek Community of Montreal.
In 1995 was appointed, by the Minister of the External Affairs of Greece for the “Greeks Abroad”, Grigoris Niotis, to develop a Software program for the Registry of Hellenes Abroad.
In 1999 was elected member of the National Council of the Hellenic Canadian Congress (National).
In 2001 was elected Vice President Administration and Secretary of the same organization.
In 2003 was elected president of Hellenic Canadian Federation (Congress) of Ontario, where he served until 2008.
He was simultaneously member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Home for the Aged in Toronto.
In 2010 was elected in the Board of Directors of the Greek Community of Toronto.
In 2012 was elected President of the Canadian Hellenic Congress (National)
Currently continues to serve the same organization as a Vice President Administration – Secretary.

Costas has occasionally published articles and reports of scientific, historical, biographic, artistic and political contents, in various Greek newspapers and magazines in Canada, U.S.A and Greece, such as:

Dr. Constantine Passaris

Dr. Constantine Passaris Dr. Constantine E. Passaris is a Professor of Economics, Faculty of Arts, at the University of New Brunswick (Canada) and an Onassis Foundation Fellow.
He is also a National Research Affiliate of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy.
He is a member of the Academic Scientific Board of the International Institute of Advanced Economic and Social Studies (Italy).
Professor Passaris is listed in the International Who's Who in Education and the Canadian Who’s Who.
In 2012, he was conferred the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his exceptional contributions to New Brunswick and Canada.
He was a visiting professor at the International Writers and Translators’ Center of Rhodes (IWTCR) in summer 2018.
Dr. Passaris is a prolific author whose scholarly publications have been published in monographs, books, encyclopaedias and academic journals.
He has written extensively on economic issues dealing with public policy, globalization, internetization, economic governance, regional development, human rights, demography, immigration and multiculturalism.
He has served as a member of the Economic Council of Canada, Chairman of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Atlantic Human Rights Center at Saint Thomas University (Canada), Chairman of the New Brunswick Advisory Board on Population Growth, a member of the New Brunswick Immigration Advisory Committee and as an advisor to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.

Dr. John Vlachopoulos

Dr. JOHN VLACHOPOULOS received his DIPL.-ING. Degree (1965) from the National Tech. Univ of Athens (NTUA), Greece,
his M.S. (1968) and D.Sc.(1969) degrees from WASHINGTON UNIV. in St. Louis, Mo. USA working on a NASA/McDonnell-Douglas sponsored project involving high temperature, turbulent air jets.
He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at McMaster University soon after defending his doctoral dissertation (August 1968).
He was Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering (1968-1974), Associate Professor (1974-1979), (Full) Professor (1979 -2007) and Professor Emeritus from 2008 to present.

He served as Department Chair for three years (1985-1988).
He was on sabbatical research leave at the Institut für Kunststoftechologie (IKT), University of Stuttgart, Germany (6 months,1975),
Centre de Mise en Forme des Materiaux (CEMEF),
Ecole des Mines de Paris (now PARISTECH),
Sophia Antipolis, France (11 months, 1981-82 and 7 months 1988-89).
Arriving at McMaster University after defending his doctoral dissertation (August 1968), John Vlachopoulos started teaching fluid mechanics, heat transfer, rheology and polymer processing courses, at both undergraduate and graduate level.
He focused the research efforts with his graduate students, research staff and postdoctoral fellows on polymer processing and rheology.
He founded and directed the Centre for Advanced Polymer Processing and Design CAPPA-D (1987-2017). His former graduate students and research coworkers are now university professors or occupy important positions in industry in Canada, USA, Latin America, Europe and the Far East.
Special emphasis was placed on rheological characterization of polymers, on developing mathematical models and solving problems of industrial relevance, using finite element and finite difference methods.
